Minutes from Summer League 2002 Meeting
January 13, 2002
We held our first meeting for AAUSL, 2002 last night. The
following are the results of that meeting, or at least most of them. If you
disagree with any of the decisions, please let me know ASAP.
- We
are definitely going to try and secure Scarlet Mitchell fields again this
year. Several people in the end of year survey mentioned that they didn’t
like that we were forced to play at various locations, although they
understood why we had to do it.
- Along
these lines, we are going to investigate doing some sort of pre-league
field maintenance to improve the quality of the field. If this is okay
with Larry Dishman (Tim is going to handle field issues again this year)
then Jim will investigate how much this might cost.
- Note
– field cost is expected to go up 50% this year. Tim will verify this.
- We
discussed again, and the survey backed up, that good captains really make
the difference between good and bad league experiences. We are going to
investigate bonuses, discounts, and other incentives for captains. Dave is
going to recruit more strongly through advertising and captain
nominations. Please give the names of anyone you think might be a good
captain to Dave.
- We
made the decision to go with a competitive league. Following are the
decisions about that:
- Tuesday
will be the competitive night; Monday and Thursday will be our standard
format.
- We
are going to be more hard-nosed about rules in the comp league, including
gender issues if enough women sign up. For example, if we have enough
women to give each team 5, then we will state that the maximum number of
men allowed on the field for each team is 5 at any time. Teams would play
short if they don’t bring enough women. We would be tougher on other
rules, too.
- Brian
will write up an explanation of the two leagues that will be used on the
registration form. I will submit this to the junta after I complete it.
- We
are going to have a draft for the comp league. Everyone signs up as an
individual, no baggage groups for this night. The comp league closes when
we get to 12 teams worth of people, and we will provide captains with the
list of players prior to the draft. Captains will pick their own team
through the draft. Details of this are still tbd. Nate will investigate with
friends in the Minnesota league. We will also ask John C and Janine if
they could provide any insight on how to do this.
i.
Note – Tim was concerned about players intentionally
lowering their score, need a way around this.
ii.
Dave registered a concern with the draft idea
iii.
Gabrielle wants to see women and men in the same draft, as
this would throw another strategic element into the draft
- We
are going to do shirts and sponsors basically like last year. Gabrielle
and Nate will lead this effort.
- Brian
will handle Insurance again.
- Sarah
and Brian are going to do advertising.
- Dave
will do discs again.
- Brian
will handle budget and league money again.
- Jarvis
will lead online registration again, but he would like someone to work
with him, since he may get a job and actually leave Ann Arbor at some
point. (just kidding, Mike, I’m sure you’ll get a job J ) If
you’re interested in helping Mike, let him know.
- We
will do 2 hat tournaments in lieu of a spring league. We were concerned
that spring league might wreck the field. The dates of the hat tournaments
are April 20 and May 18. Dave and Nate will lead these, with help from the
rest of us.
- Tim
is planning to go to a couple of city council meetings on the larger field
issue. We may make a presentation on this subject. Tim will provide more
details on this soon.
- Next
meeting – we will discuss the subject of pickups, among other issues. Next
meeting will be in a month. Exact date tbd.
