Winter League 2006 - Details

If the 90 person limit is reached for a gender; group registrations will no longer be possible for members of that gender and individual registrants will be placed on the waitlist. (You can only sign up on the waitlist individually, otherwise it's too hard to add you to a team.) Players will be added from the waitlist as soon as possible as other players drop out or fail to pay, or later during the season if and when attendance drops off. Only paid registrants will be added from the waitlist. If you are added from the waitlist after the first game, your registration fee will be refunded on a pro-rated basis based on when you got added. If you don't get added, we'll refund your entire fee at the end of the season, or whenever you ask us to, whichever comes first.

As with all Ultimate games, the emphasis in Winter League will be on high spirit, great exercise and fun for both newcomers and experienced players. However, the league has decided that indoor Ultimate should be treated somewhat differently than outdoor Ultimate, mainly because there will be a time cap on games.

The biggest thing is time—each team gets 90 minutes to set up, warm up, play the game, collect the cones and clear the field. Teams should clear the fields BEFORE time is up to ensure that all teams get enough playing time. Teams should arrive at least 15–20 minutes before games begin—but will not be able to take the field before 7:30pm. Captains may arrange to meet teams in the lobby/concourse area before games to review strategies, etc.

Secondly, because of time caps, games may not end when a team scores 15 points—and may even end after a team scores more than 15 points or mid-point. Teams will not need to win by two to win and games may even end in ties (Tie games are the best games anyway, and this is a rec league so standings don't matter anyway.) No standings will be posted on-line—though the last games will match teams with similar records.

Thirdly, teams should not use non-registered pickup players. The league wants to make sure everyone gets enough playing time in winter league and because of its increased expense—that everyone gets their money's worth! If teams are short on players, captains may ask around to see if other teams have extra players or play 6 on 6 if needed.

Last but not least, winter league is co-ed. Captains should discuss gender balance before the game, and play with as much balance possible based on attendance, while making sure players of both genders each get their fair amount of play time. If one team as many more of either gender than the other team, some players should swap for the game so that no-one gets less than their fair share of play time because of their gender.

Suggestions for keeping games moving quickly and smoothly. Teams should determine whether they will implement these before games:

  • Stalling out at 8 instead of 10
  • Limiting non-injury calls resulting in stopping play (time-outs, picks, fouls, etc.)
  • Halftimes may be played through or reduced if captains agree
  • Zone defense/offense may be used at any time but still should be reviewed with veterans and taught to newcomers if necessary.
  • Captains should call lines as quickly as possible

Summary of rules reminders/modifications to remember:

  • Games end at 8:55/10:25 to allow time to clear the field
  • Discs contacting the sides of the dome, netting (or anything off field) are a turnover, where they hit the dome.
  • Foot blocks are not allowed within 2 meters of the thrower.
  • Dropped pulls are not a turnover. Instead the Offense freezes, the Defense gets to set up and then check the disc in.
  • There is a 20 yard brick for pulls out the back of the field.
